What is the difference between an inspection and a control?

Introduction

For lifting equipment, it’s important to distinguish between an inspection and a certification. Both contribute to safety, but they differ in purpose, legal obligations, and who is authorised to carry them out. In this article, we explain what these terms mean and who is responsible.

What is an control?

Purpose: A control is carried out to assess whether the lifting equipment is safe to use.

Who performs it?

  • A maintenance company.
  • An internally authorised person within the company.

Frequency: The frequency of controls is determined by internal procedures or recommendations from the maintenance company.

What is an inspection?

Purpose: An inspection is a legal requirement that ensures the lifting equipment complies with all applicable safety requirements and legal standards.

Who performs it?

Only a Recognised Service for Supervision and Inspection (EDTC) is authorised to perform an inspection.

Frequency: The frequency of inspections is determined by law and varies depending on the type of lifting equipment.
