Control requirements for fire safety

Fire safety includes a range of measures aimed at preventing fires and limiting their impact. Various fire safety assets must be regularly checked. In this article, we explain the control requirements for fire extinguishers, hose reels, hydrants, emergency lighting, sprinkler systems, and fire alarm panels.

Annual checks

The following fire safety assets must be checked annually by a certified company:

  • Fire extinguishers
  • Hose reels
  • Hydrants
  • Emergency lighting
  • Sprinkler systems

Fire alarm panel checks

A fire alarm panel can be checked by:

  • A maintenance company
  • A certified company
  • An Accredited Expert for Supervision and Control (EDTC)

Two types of checks can be carried out:

  • Functional check
    • Frequency: annually
    • Purpose: Verify that the fire alarm panel is functioning correctly.
  • Check according to standards
    • Frequency: every 3 years
    • Purpose: Assess whether the fire alarm panel complies with legal standards, often required through a fire department report.
