Inspection and control requirements for lifts and escalators

Lifts and escalators are subject to specific control and inspection obligations. In this article, we explain the requirements for passenger lifts, goods lifts, and escalators, including inspection frequencies and who is authorised to carry them out.

Passenger lifts

Passenger lifts must be periodically inspected by an Accredited Expert for Supervision and Control (EDTC).

Frequency depends on the maintenance contract:

  • With a maintenance contract: inspection by a certified maintenance company every 6 months, with an EDTC inspection also every 6 months.
  • Without a maintenance contract: inspection by an EDTC every 3 months.

For private lifts, an annual inspection by an EDTC is required.

Goods lifts

Goods lifts must be inspected every 3 months by an EDTC.

Escalators

Escalators do not need to be inspected by law but must undergo an annual check.

This check can be carried out by:

  • The maintenance company
  • An internally authorised person
  • An EDTC
